IQNA – Norway rejected an asylum application by Salwan Momika, an Iraqi refugee who desecrated the Holy Quran several times in Sweden in the past months.

Protest against Quran desecration

Norwegian officials have reportedly handed Momika over to Sweden after rejecting the application, An-Nushra website reported.

He told the Swedish daily Expressen that since his residence permit in Sweden will expire on April 16, he is going to apply for asylum in Sweden again.

Momika had applied for asylum in Norway after receiving a deportation order from Sweden.

Upon his arrival in Norway on March 28, he was detained by Norwegian police and had since been held at the Trandum immigration detention center.

Norway’s security service assessed Momika as “a threat to fundamental national interests,” according to an Oslo District Court ruling.

Momika, who was granted a residence permit in Sweden in 2021, is notorious for his acts of Quran desecration in the country.

His actions in Sweden and Denmark, justified under the banner of free speech, have incited outrage in Muslim countries and led to attacks on diplomatic missions.

In response to widespread protests, Denmark enacted legislation last December criminalizing the public burning of Quran copies. Sweden is also considering legal measures that would enable police to deny demonstration permits on the grounds of national security.
