Thai Islamic Center Announces Number of Mosques in Country

IQNA – The Islamic Center of Thailand in a report announced the number of mosques in the Southeast Asian country.

The center, which is in charge of Islamic affairs in the country, said there are 4,059 mosques in Thailand.

Most of the mosques are located in the southern parts of the country where the majority of Thai Muslims live.

The figure only includes the mosques that are registered and funded by the center, it said.

Thailand is a country at the center of the Indochinese peninsula in Southeast Asia.

Muslims are the second largest religious group in Thailand making up about five percent of the country’s 70 million population.

Islam was first introduced to the Thai people by Sheikh Ahmad Qomi.

He was an Iranian Shia Muslim who promoted Islam in Thailand in the 16th century AD and became the country’s first Sheikh-ul-Islam.
