Muharram Mourners in Karbala Carry Qurans in Reaction to Quran Desecration (+Video)

KARBALA (IQNA) – People attending mourning rituals in Karbala marking the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Hussein (AS) carry copies of the Quran with them to show their condemnation of the recent acts of Quran desecration in Europe.

They demonstrate their strong objection to the recent defiling of the Holy Book and other Islamic sanctities in Sweden and Denmark.

In recent weeks, Islamophobes have desecrated the Quran several times in the capitals of the two European countries.

In the latest such incident, two individuals set fire to a copy of the Quran in front of the Iraqi embassy in the Danish capital of Copenhagen on Monday.

A large number of pilgrims are in Karbala during the first ten days of the lunar Hijri month of Muharram, to mourn the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Hussein (AS).

Muharram, which began on Thursday, is the first month in the lunar Hijri calendar.

Shia Muslims, and others in different parts of the world, hold ceremonies every year in the month of Muharram to mourn the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Hussein (AS) and his companions.

The third Shia Imam (AS) and a small group of his followers and family members were martyred by the tyrant of his time - Yazid Bin Muawiya, in the battle of Karbala on the tenth day of Muharram (known as Ashura) in the year 680 AD.
