BEIRUT (IQNA) – Senior Lebanese cleric Sheikh Ali Fadlallah underlined judicious reaction to desecration of Islamic sanctities and called for naming a day as the world Quran day.

Fadlallah made the remarks in a Sunday meeting with a delegation of Lebanese youths who have launched a campaign for defending the Quran and opposing desecration of religious sanctities.

He appreciated the youth for their efforts to oppose sacrilegious acts like the recent Quran burning in Sweden, stressing that such acts of desecration cannot be justified in the name of freedom of expression.

The cleric said the reasons behind these sacrilegious acts should be determined and opposed, adding that extremists in Europe seek to tarnish the image of Islam and its teachings.

Reactions to acts of desecration should be judicious and realistic, he said, stressing the need for vigilance in order not to fall in the traps set by extremists and racists.

Elsewhere in his remarks, he said naming a day as the world Quran day could be helpful in defending the sanctity of the Holy Book and promoting its teachings.

On June 29, a 37-year-old individual named Salwan Momika burned pages of the Quran outside a mosque in Stockholm on the first day of Eid al-Adha.

The Swedish police had earlier given permission for the act of sacrilege.

The act sparked widespread outrage among Muslims worldwide and drew condemnation from different countries.

Pope Francis, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), the European Union, and the Swedish government also strongly condemned the incident.
