In a telephone conversation with Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein on Saturday, Guterres appreciated the cleric’s efforts for promoting security, peace and coexistence and said he would soon write a letter in response.

The UN chief also condemned the Quran burning in Sweden and said he closely follows developments in the Muslim world.

Fuad Hussein, in this telephone conversation, underlined that such sacrilegious acts create problems in the ties between the Muslim world and European countries.

They also spread Islamophobia as well as extremism and terrorism in the world, he stated.

The Iraqi top diplomat called for international cooperation to confront the ideologies that lead to insulting religious sanctities and burning of divine books.

The act of sacrilege in Stockholm, which was authorized by a Swedish court, involved two men who burnt pages of the Muslim holy book outside the Stockholm Central Mosque on Wednesday.

The incident coincided with Eid al-Adha, a Muslim celebration that marks the end of the annual Hajj pilgrimage that attracts millions of Muslims from around the world.

The Quran desecration has drawn widespread condemnations from across the Muslim world.
