IQNA – Iranians across the nation took to the streets on Sunday to commemorate the 45th anniversary of the 1979 Islamic Revolution that toppled the US-backed Pahlavi dynasty and ushered in a new era of Islamic governance and resistance.

The demonstrators expressed their loyalty to the Islamic establishment and the late founder of the Islamic Revolution, Imam Khomeini, by chanting pro-Islamic slogans and waving the Iranian flags.

More than 7,300 domestic and foreign journalists covered the event, which was also attended by Iran’s President Ebrahim Raeisi, who delivered a speech at Tehran’s Azadi Square.

Raeisi said that Iran had successfully resisted the Western pressure to abandon its support for Palestine and the ideals of the revolution, despite the war, sanctions, and propaganda campaigns.

The president added that forty-five years after the victory of the revolution, it is now proven that “the Islamic Republic and our visionary Imam” were right in saying that Palestine is the first issue of the Islamic world and that al-Quds must be freed.

The night before the rallies, fireworks lit up the sky in Tehran and other cities, as people shouted Allahu Akbar (God is the Greatest) in a show of unity with the revolution.

The rallies coincided with the 22nd of Bahman in the solar calendar, which marks the date when the Pahlavi regime was overthrown by a popular uprising in 1979, ending the foreign interference in Iran’s affairs.

The anniversary is part of the Ten Day Fajr (Ten Days of Dawn) festivities, which begin on February 1, the day when Imam Khomeini returned to Iran from exile in 1979, and end on February 11, the day when the revolution triumphed.

The revolution ended the 2,500 years of monarchical rule in Iran and established a new political system based on Islamic principles and democracy.
