TEHRAN (IQNA) –  Ahmed el-Tayyeb, the grand imam of Egypt’s Al-Azhar Islamic Center, congratulated Muslims worldwide on the arrival Ramadan.

In a message on Monday, el-Tayyeb prayed that God bless the Muslim Ummah in the holy month.

“We pray that God may help us make the most of this month on the path of worshipping, obeying (God’s commandments) and forgiveness and getting closer to God and make Ramadan the month of security and peace for the whole world,” he said, RT Arabic reported.

The message came after Egypt’s Dar al-Ifta announced Tuesday as the first day of Ramadan.

Grand Mufti Shawki Allam said the crescent moon was not observed on Sunday evening and, therefore, Tuesday will be the first day of the holy month.

In Ramadan adult Muslims, save the sick and those traveling, abstain from eating, drinking, and smoking from dawn and dusk and dedicate their time to prayer, self-restraint and good deeds. It is also customary to read the holy Quran during the fasting month.
