TEHRAN (IQNA) – Members of a mosque in Queens, New York, sprang into action after a teenager allegedly maced a livery driver, stole his vehicle and crashed into several others nearby.

Police say the incident occurred on Glenmore Avenue in Queens, near the Al-Furqan Jame Masjid mosque, around noon Friday.

According to driver MD Luthfuraham, the teenager and another carjacker used pepper spray in the assault before pulling him from his vehicle and driving away.

After their mini demolition derby down the block, one suspect took off but the teenager couldn’t get away thanks to a group of people nearby.

The incident happened as a mosque, where Luthfuraham is a member, observed Friday prayer outside in keeping with social distancing. Police say the members of the mosque participating in prayer saw the incident happen and chased the suspect, holding him until officers arrived.

The teen was taken to Jamaica Hospital for treatment of injuries he suffered in a fall.

The extent of the teen's injuries are unknown. Police say charges are pending.

The driver who was pepper sprayed was also taken to Jamaica Hospital in stable condition.

The investigation is ongoing. NYPD stats show that car thefts in the neighborhood have skyrocketed this year, up 70 percent compared to 2019.
