Azeri Translator of Quran Dies at 77
TEHRAN (IQNA) – An Azerbaijani scholar who did the first translation of the Quran into the Azeri language died on Monday.
According to the Islamic Culture and Relations Organization, Vasim Memmedaliyev died at the age of 77.
Born in 1942 in Baku, Memmedaliyev studied Arabic language and literature at the University of Baku.
He authored more than 20 books and many papers and articles.
His translation of the Quran in Azeri, the first in the language, was published in 1991.
It has been reprinted several times since.
Memmedaliyev also served as members of the Arabic and Quranic sciences academies of Iraq, Syria and Egypt.
