Zimbabwe Muslim, Christian Scholars Discuss Peaceful Coexistence
The event was held in Harare on Tuesday on the occasion of Prophet Muhammad’s (PBUH) birthday and the Islamic Unity Week.
In an address, Iranian Cultural Attaché in Zimbabwe Reza Askari highlighted the meaning of the word ‘Islam’, which is peace, and, referring to a verse from the Quran, said the Prophet of Islam came to promote mercy and friendship among mankind.
The participants discussed views of different faiths, especially Islam and Christianity, about issues like peaceful coexistence, women’s rights and protection of the environment.
The 17th day of the month of Rabi al-Awwal in the lunar Hijri calendar (falls on November 25 this year) is believed by Shia Muslims to mark the birth anniversary of Prophet Mohammad (PBUH), while Sunni Muslims regard the 12th day of the month (November 20 this year) as the birthday of the last prophet.
The interval between the two dates is celebrated every year as the Islamic Unity Week.
