Sheikh Abdullah al-Daqqaq told IQNA that Sheikh Qassim has returned home after undergoing a surgery and remains under house arrest.

The senior cleric’s health is improving and he is no longer at risk, Daqqaq said.

He added that Sheikh Qassim needs special medical attention because of illnesses that have worsened in the past one and a half years as a result of the Al Khalifa regime’s siege on the cleric’s house in the village of Diraz, near Manama.

Daqqaq called for pressures on the ruling regime in Bahrain to end the siege.

He also hoped for full recovery of Sheikh Qassim to lead the Bahraini people’ revolution to the desired result.

Earlier this month, Qassim was taken to a private hospital in critical condition after weeks of suffering from deteriorating health.

He has been under house arrest for around 500 days amid daily protest gatherings in the northwestern village of Diraz which is besieged by regime forces.

The cleric, known as the spiritual leader of the country's Shia Muslim majority, has been hailed as a source of inspiration for their peaceful demonstrations against the ruling regime.

The monarchy has killed scores of people and imprisoned hundreds of people among the protesters, who are campaigning for an elected government and a stop to discrimination against the Shias.

Back in June, Sheikh Qassim faced potential expulsion from Bahrain after authorities revoked his citizenship, accusing him of “illegal fund collections, money laundering and helping terrorism.” He has strongly rejected all the allegations.
