German Photographer’s Depiction of Seminary Life in Iran

TEHRAN (IQNA) – An exhibition was launched in the northeastern Iranian city of Mashhad showcasing photographs by Hans Georg Berger, a German photographer and writer.


The photos, taken over five years during Berger’s trips to the Iranian cities of Mashhad, Isfahan and Qom, feature religion and the life of Shia seminary students.

Born in 1951 in Trier, Germany, Berger presently divides his time between Italy, Germany, Iran, Bangkok and Luang Prabang, Laos. He studied comparative religion and drama in Germany and the United States.

Since 1988, Berger produced a series of long-term photography projects involving world religions, including Theravada Buddhism in Burma, Thailand, Cambodia and Laos as well as Shia Islam in Iran.
